Congratulations to Jimmy Downham who was awarded Honorary Freeman of the City of Lancaster.
Nearly 100 'friends' of 90 years old Jimmy attended the special evening at Lancaster Boys & Girls Club where he was presented with his scroll from the Mayor of Lancaster councillor Tony Wade.
It was as a young 13 years old, Jimmy joined Lancaster Boys Club which became his second home. He later became a voluntary leader and sat on the management committee for many years until he retired after 70 years with the club! Jimmy was also a great supporter of LABC and LACYP.
Many people attended not because it was another target or a box to tick, but because of the influence he had in their lives. 'Without respect we have nothing' are his words of wisdom. You can't buy time, you can't slow it down, but you can give it'.
Those were not only his other wise words but the way he has lived his life. Giving his time for others, without expecting any reward other than respect and courtesy.
It this new era of the BIG SOCIETY, look no further to see what it means in action, by examing the values and traditions of 'boys club' and the contribution made by people like Jimmy Downham
